a time to chill

Sunset, beach, and a bottle of cold beer - a moment's refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city.

We took a trip to Anawangin, Zambales last month (see previous post) and this was one of the highlights of our short respite. The rest of the time was spent trekking, swimming, cooking, and singing while playing the guitar. Oh, and yes, we drank beer and vodka all day. :)

here, but not quite

My sister just got out of the hospital yesterday where she was confined since Tuesday to treat an infection.

Tuesday afternoon, at Polymedic hospital...
Me on cell: "Mom, we're here at Polymedic hospital. Lil sis had to be confined. Where are you?"
Mom: "I'm still at QC. I'll be heading there as soon as I'm done."
Me: "OK. We're at this room on the 4th floor. We'll wait for you then. Don't worry we're ok."
Mom: "OK, see you later."

After an hour...
Text message from mom: "D2 N KO 4TH FLOOR. SAN KAYO?" (I'm here at the 4th floor. Where are you?)

Sitting at the fourth floor lobby with no mom in sight, I tried to reply with a text message but unfortunately was out of credits.

Another text message from mom: "D2 AKO 5TH FLOOR. KANINA PA AKO D2." (I'm at the 5th floor. It's been a while since I got here."

I went up one floor to see if she really was there. Nothing.

I went downstairs to the information booth.

Me: "Sir, may I have my mom paged? I ran out of credits and I couldn't find her. Could you please ask the people at the 5th floor if there was a visitor for Ms.***? Thanks."

Sir: "Sorry we can't page her, but I can ask the 5th floor people if they've seen your mom.." A few seconds later... "No, she's not there."

So I went up to the 4th floor again and asked my sister if she received any message from mom. My sister got up the bed and said, trying hard to stifle her giggles, "Mom is at Medical City!"

When life throws you lemons, it's time to call your friends over and bring some tequila.

stroll down memory lane

If you read this journal, even if I don't speak to you often, post a memory of me.
It can be anything you want.
It can be good or bad, just so long as it happened.
Then post this on your journal too!

(Be surprised (or not) about what people remember about you.)

attacked by a vampire

My day started with someone sucking my blood. .. for blood tests that is.

Our homeowners’ association periodically hosts medical missions for its residents once or twice a year. Health services such as blood tests, ECG, x-ray exam, and urinalysis are offered to residents at a reduced fee. My mom, my brother and I availed of these services except for x-ray exam this morning at our barangay hall extension.

For someone who is a certified first-aider and basic life support giver, a licensed chemist, and who once considered taking up surgery as a profession, you would think that going through blood tests would be a walk in the park for me. Not true. I’m OK with blood and needles as long as they’re not mine.

I cringed at the sight of the 5-mL test tubes filled with blood and the medical technologists (?) doing the deed without gloves, nor masks. Even if they did use a new syringe and needle each time and prepped the patient and their selves with alcohol, I couldn’t help but feel queasy. It didn’t help that as a chemist, I was fully aware of the dangers that lurk with improper lab techniques and practices and the abundance of fresh body fluids. At least the person handling the urine samples was wearing gloves. Still… Hello HIV???

I allowed myself to undergo such mental and physical torture in the name of medical science. I turned away and closed my eyes just as she was about to prick my arm.

The test results will be available a week after.

(Fuchsia girl crosses fingers (and toes) and hopes that everything will be alright.)

'90s songs - angelina???

my brothers have been bugging me endlessly about a certain 'angelina' song. for the life of me i cannot remember who the artist was. the only thing i recall was that it was somehow sung in french.

this so-called 'angelina' song came out in the early nineties, about 1992-ish, along with the song 'extasi-extano (a.k.a. asi me gusta mi)' by chimo bayo.

if anyone could at least give me the name of the artist who sang 'angelina,' please drop me a line. thanks!

catch!

i saw my sister glued to the pc a few nights ago. she was playing this game where a miner hauls gold nuggets, coal, gems and bags of goodies similar to how you do the 'alien catcher' at the games arcade at malls.

i used to play 'alien catcher' at the mall when i was about 10 or 12 years old. back then each token cost around Php5.00 each. there was a time when i blew about php200 worth of tokens but took home only two small fluff toys - a green dinosaur and a pink bunny. i was so happy and proud of my new found skill that when i saw a bigger much cuter fluff toy at the store for about the same prize, i was still very much contented with my loot for the day.

anyways, here is the game that got my sister and me preoccupied for the last couple of days. (see bottom)
